What does dedicated transportation really mean?

A Case Study

Years ago, West Bend Transit was asked to intervene in an operation because the incumbent carrier was failing. Inbound shipments would arrive at any time without notice. Outbound shipments would be missed thus congesting the dock and oftentimes they had local shipments between their plants that were hot to trot that did not move quickly.

WBT was called initially to just help with the “backlog” so the dock areas could be cleared. Everyone was stressed at the time from the dock worker to the director level.

Once WBT helped stabilize the day to day, we sat down to share what we had learned. We listened to multiple stakeholders, and each had a point or two of what was important to them.

You see, a dedicated operation is an extension of your company, It is in no way transactional.

The solution included I.T. procurement, operations, yard management, outside vendors, equipment providers, accounting, safety and HR.  What they realized was that they had grown beyond what was managed by many, needed to be managed by one. That is what dedicated transportation truly is.

It operates 365 days a year 24/7 and is guaranteed capacity. Our professional drivers get to know the account so well that often they are anticipating the next moves and positioning themselves to be where they know they will be needed next.

The right driver uses the right equipment to move the right shipment at the right time, every time, without fail.

WBT now handles thousands of moves per month and operates at over 99% on time, un-scrubbed and with the data to back that number. Claims? We have none. That should be your expectation.

Is it a big endeavor to move to a dedicated operation? Yes, it is, but everyone agrees that once it is done, it is what makes them better than their competition as it improves the experience with their customers.
