Yard Management - Reducing the Headache

Recently, an opportunity arose with a large manufacturing location in the Chicago area. This company has over 200 dock doors and the ability to house over 500 trailers. They were always asking carriers to drop their trailer, pull another from a door and put that trailer in the yard. Some carriers did so gladly, and many others were not so kind.

It became more and more of an issue. Most carriers will not pull another carriers equipment if even a few yards away due to liability issues without an interchange agreement. The Customer was not wanting to rent or buy a spotter/yard horse and bring on additional labor which would have been 24-hour coverage.

WBT listened to the opportunity, executed a time study on movements, gathered all stakeholders at the plant and presented a plan to reduce these headaches. As a result, operations, safety, sales, HR, and corporate were all impressed due to:

• Less chances for damages with less carriers on the lots.
• Less chances for driver injuries due to trailer landing gear.
• A better lot plan with empties and focused lanes.
• More specialized experience handing the spotter units.
• More open dock doors for more equipment to be placed.
• Less congestion on the docks awaiting an empty trailer.
• More sales as it is not a receivable until it is off the dock.
• An ROI that was quickly realized due to bringing on WBT.

Given the opportunity, WBT will listen to your concerns and provide a strategic response to reduce your headaches.
